The US Open Tennis Championships

New York, United States

New York · August · Subject to availability

Late August into September — dates to be confirmed

The last major of the year, played on hard courts in Queens across a fortnight of extreme late-summer heat and floodlit night sessions.

The US Open is the loudest and least reverent of the four majors, and deliberately so. The night sessions in the main stadium, under lights and with a New York crowd, produce an atmosphere that the other three do not attempt. The tennis is played on hard courts in genuine heat, which favours a different kind of player, and the fortnight runs from late August into the first week of September. The grounds sit in Queens, twenty to forty minutes from Manhattan depending entirely on the hour. New York in that period is quiet by its own standards, with the city between the summer exodus and the autumn season, which makes the surrounding restaurant and cultural programme unusually accessible for those building a week around the tennis.

Why it matters

It closes the tennis year and does so in the most commercially significant city on the circuit, which brings a concentration of business and media presence that the other majors lack. The night sessions are the singular experience in the sport, and the city around the fortnight is at one of its most agreeable points in the year.

Frequently asked

Day session or night session?

The night sessions carry the atmosphere the tournament is known for. The day sessions offer far better access to the outside courts and the developing matches.

How is movement to the grounds handled?

By road outside peak hours, or by helicopter from Manhattan, which takes under ten minutes and avoids the evening return.

What is the weather likely to be?

Hot and humid in the first week, moderating into September. The stadium roofs cover rain but the heat is a genuine consideration for full days.
