Mid April — dates to be confirmed
The opening of the European clay season, played on terraces cut into the cliff above the Mediterranean.
The Monte-Carlo Country Club sits on terraces above the sea just across the French border, and the setting is the reason the tournament occupies the position it does in the affections of the sport. The courts are red clay, the season's first significant test on the surface, and the leading players use it to establish form for the months that follow. The scale is modest by comparison with the majors: the crowd is smaller, the courts are close, and the whole event has the character of a private club occasion rather than a stadium fixture. April on the Côte d'Azur is before the season proper begins, which means the coast is open, uncrowded and considerably easier to arrange than it will be six weeks later.

Why it matters
It opens the European clay season and does so in a setting no other tournament can approach, with genuine proximity to the players and an atmosphere closer to a club match than a major. The timing places it before the Riviera season begins, which makes it the most agreeable point of the year to be on that coast.

Frequently asked
How close is the access to play?
Unusually close. The club is small by tour standards and the terraces sit almost on top of the courts, with the practice courts open to view.
Is Monaco or the French coast the better base?
Monaco for proximity, Cap Ferrat or Èze for a quieter stay ten to twenty minutes away. Both are straightforward in April.
What is the coast like at that point in the year?
Open and uncrowded. The Riviera season has not begun, restaurants are accessible and the roads move, which is not true from May onwards.
What does Scott & Vale arrange?
Accommodation, air and ground movement, marine arrangements, dining and the itinerary, with introductions to authorised hospitality providers where such programmes exist.
