Aspen operates four separate mountains — Ajax above the town, Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass — which between them accommodate every standard of skiing without the crowding that a single-mountain resort produces. The town below is a nineteenth-century silver settlement rather than a purpose-built resort, and that gives it a scale and a restaurant culture that its European equivalents in the same bracket largely lack. The season runs from late December to early April, with the Christmas and New Year fortnight and the President's Day period at absolute capacity and the weeks in late January and March materially quieter and better for snow. Houses on Red Mountain and in the West End are committed a year ahead for the peak weeks.

Why it matters
It is the established winter base of the American season and holds a resident and seasonal community of considerable weight through the whole winter rather than for a single week. The four-mountain arrangement and the quality of the town make it the most complete winter destination in North America, and the shoulder weeks offer the same terrain with none of the peak-period constraint.

Arrival by air
- ASE — Aspen-Pitkin County In the valley; restricted aircraft types, daylight-dependent approaches and weather diversions are common.
- EGE — Eagle County Ninety minutes by road, with fewer restrictions and the usual diversion field in poor weather.
Helicopter. Rotations from Eagle and Rifle are the standard answer to an Aspen diversion, and are worth holding in reserve for arrivals during a weather system.

- 01 Day One Arrival and settling into the residence, with equipment fitted and instruction arranged for the following morning.
- 02 Day Two Ajax from the gondola, with lunch on the mountain and the afternoon in the town.

- 04 Day Four Snowmass for a full day, which suits mixed-ability parties better than the other mountains.
