The Open is played on links land, which means firm ground, coastal wind and a form of the game that bears little resemblance to the manicured American majors. The championship rotates among a small group of courses on the British and Irish coast, announced by the organisers several years ahead, and each brings its own logistics: these are remote coastal towns with limited accommodation, and the surrounding country is often the reason to extend the trip. The golf beyond the championship course is exceptional. Any Open rotation venue sits within reach of several other links of the first rank, and a week built around playing them, with two or three days at the championship, is the arrangement most golfers prefer.
