The first major of the golfing year, held on the same Georgia course each April, and the most tightly controlled event in sport.
The Masters is unlike anything else in this calendar in one respect: the club controls it absolutely. Admission is administered entirely by Augusta National under its own long-standing arrangements, mobile telephones are prohibited on the grounds, commercial activity is minimal and the conventions of behaviour are enforced without exception. The effect is a tournament that feels closer to 1960 than to modern sport, and that is precisely its appeal. The practice rounds earlier in the week are the connoisseur's choice, offering close access to the players and a far calmer course than the competitive days. Augusta itself is a small Georgia city with limited hotel stock, and the established arrangement is a private house taken for the week, of which there is a well-developed local market.

Helicopter. Rotations from Columbia, Atlanta and the coastal courses operate through the week and are the usual answer to Augusta's slot constraints.
