The America's Cup has been contested since 1851 and operates on terms unlike any other event in sport: the holder chooses the venue, the class of boat and the timing, and the challenger series that precedes the match determines who sails against them. The boats are the most technically advanced racing yachts in the world and the racing is conducted close inshore, which means it can be watched properly from the water or from the shore rather than disappearing over the horizon.
