The Derby is the first leg of the American Triple Crown and the most watched two minutes in the sport, but the reason to spend a week in Kentucky is what surrounds it. The Bluegrass country around Lexington holds the breeding operations that supply the international thoroughbred market, and the farms receive during Derby week in a way they do not otherwise. Stallion visits, yearling inspections and sales conversations run through the days before the race. At Churchill Downs itself, the distinction between the various enclosures and suites is significant and admission arrangements are made months ahead. The oaks card on the Friday is the local preference and considerably easier to attend properly than the Saturday.
