Twelve days in which the Croisette becomes the centre of the film industry, and the market beneath it does the actual business.
Cannes operates on two levels. The festival is the public one: competition screenings at the Palais, the steps, and a critical verdict that carries real weight in the industry. Beneath it runs the Marché du Film, the largest film market in the world, where rights are traded and productions are financed in a set of rooms and yachts along the port. For principals with media interests, the market is the reason to attend. For everyone else, the appeal is the concentration: the Croisette in late May holds an unusually dense mix of industry, finance and Riviera society, with a programme of dinners and gatherings running continuously along the coast from Cap d'Antibes to the Îles de Lérins. The town is small and completely full, and every practical decision — where to stay, how to move, when to eat — has to be made months ahead.

Why it matters
The Marché is where film financing and rights actually change hands, and for family offices with media exposure it is the most efficient week of the year. The surrounding programme, staged largely on the Cap and on chartered vessels in the bay, is where the introductions happen. Cannes is also the point at which the Riviera season formally begins, which is why many principals combine the festival with their first weeks on the coast.

Arrival by air
- CEQ — Cannes Mandelieu Ten minutes from the Croisette; slots during the festival are allocated far in advance.
- NCE — Nice Côte d'Azur Thirty minutes by road, seven by helicopter, with full handling capacity.
Helicopter. Continuous rotations between Nice and Cannes run through the festival and are the only dependable means of holding to a schedule; the coast road is saturated from mid-morning.

Is it necessary to be in Cannes itself?
No, and many prefer not to be. Cap d'Antibes, Cap Ferrat and Saint-Tropez all serve as bases, with movement by helicopter or tender.

The Marché du Film runs alongside the festival and is where rights and financing are transacted. Attendance there is professional and separately administered.
How far ahead must the week be arranged?
