The art market's most consequential week, held in a quiet Swiss city on the Rhine, where the year's most significant works change hands.
Art Basel is the market's principal fair and has been since the 1970s. Some two hundred and eighty galleries exhibit at Messe Basel, and the works shown in the ground-floor halls on the first preview day represent a substantial share of the material of real consequence that will trade publicly in the year. The rhythm is strict. The first preview is the commercial day, and the important works are placed within hours; by the time the fair opens more broadly, the picture has largely settled. Around the fair, Basel is dense with institutional programming — the Fondation Beyeler, the Kunstmuseum and Schaulager all mount significant exhibitions to the same week — and the satellite fairs run in parallel. The city itself is small, orderly and quickly crossed, which makes the week considerably more manageable than its scale suggests.

Why it matters
For collectors, the first preview day at Basel is the single most consequential few hours in the art market calendar, and preparation determines outcome entirely. Advisers work months ahead on which works will be present and where. Beyond acquisition, the week functions as the market's annual convention: institutional directors, advisers, conservators and the specialist legal and shipping trades are all in the same small city at the same time.

Arrival by air
- BSL — EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Fifteen minutes from the city; business aviation capacity is heavily subscribed during the fair.
- ZRH — Zurich An hour by road or thirty minutes by rail, with far greater aviation capacity.
Helicopter. Rotations from Zurich and Geneva operate during the fair week, though the rail connection from Zurich is frequently the faster and more reliable option.

- 01 Day One Arrival the evening before the first preview, with a briefing from an adviser on the works of interest and their locations in the halls.

How is preview attendance determined?
By the fair and the exhibiting galleries, on the basis of collecting history and adviser relationships. It is not a matter of arrangement at short notice.
What preparation makes the difference?
Knowing which works will be present, from which galleries, and in which hall, before arriving. Advisers begin this work two to three months out.
Is Basel or Zurich the better base?
Basel for the fair week itself, if arranged early. Zurich is a viable alternative with a fast rail connection and considerably more capacity.
